Choosing the Right Stream After Class 10: A Practical Guide

Prabhjot Kaur··5 min read

Every year, thousands of students in Chandigarh Tricity and across India face one of the most consequential decisions of their academic lives — which stream to take after Class 10. The pressure is enormous, and the advice is often contradictory.

Here is how we approach this with students at Edvera.

Start With Strengths, Not Trends

The most common mistake is choosing a stream based on what is "popular" or what parents or peers recommend. Science may be prestigious, but if a student struggles with Physics and Maths, three years of misery and poor results serve no one.

Begin with an honest assessment of your strengths: which subjects come naturally? Which ones do you find yourself thinking about outside of school? These are your signal — not the marks alone, but genuine aptitude and interest.

Think About Careers, Not Just Subjects

Each stream opens certain doors and narrows others — but the walls are not as rigid as they once were. Commerce students can move into technology. Arts students can build strong careers in law, design, media, and management.

Think about the broad career direction you are drawn towards, then work backwards to the stream that best supports it. If you are unsure about careers at Class 10 (which is completely normal), focus on your strengths and keep your options open.

Do Not Underestimate Arts and Commerce

There is a persistent bias in Indian education that Science is the "smart" choice. This is wrong and harmful. Commerce and Arts streams lead to equally successful, well-paying, and fulfilling careers. Some of the most competitive undergraduate programmes globally — in law, economics, liberal arts, and design — are better accessed through non-Science streams.

Get Proper Guidance Before Deciding

This decision deserves more than a conversation over dinner. A structured career counselling session — covering aptitude, personality, career research, and honest family discussions — makes a measurable difference. At Edvera, we offer exactly this for Class 9 and 10 students and their families.
