For most Indian students applying to universities in the UK, Canada, or Australia, the choice comes down to IELTS or PTE Academic. Both are widely accepted. The question is which one gives you the best result.
Format: The Key Difference
IELTS uses a human examiner for the Speaking test — a face-to-face conversation. Writing and Reading are also done on paper (Academic paper-based) or computer. Results take 3–13 days.
PTE Academic is fully computer-based and AI-scored. Everything is done on a computer, including Speaking (you speak into a microphone). Results are available in 48 hours.
Who Does Better on IELTS?
Students who perform well in conversational settings and have strong written English typically do well on IELTS. The human examiner in Speaking can be more forgiving of pronunciation nuances, and the test format is familiar to students used to traditional exam environments.
Who Does Better on PTE?
Students who are more comfortable speaking to a screen than a person — or who find face-to-face speaking anxiety-inducing — often prefer PTE. The AI scoring is consistent and objective, which suits students with strong grammar but non-Indian-accented English. The quick turnaround is also a big advantage if you are working against a deadline.
Practical Advice
- Take a free practice test for both and see which format suits you.
- Check your target universities' specific score requirements — most accept both, but some have band-specific requirements.
- Do not leave the test until the last moment. Most students need at least one preparation attempt.
